The Chicago White Sox obtain catcher Jim Essian from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for controversial slugger Dick Allen and a reported $5,000. Allen will refuse to report to Atlanta and retire instead. Richie Ashburn will help coax Allen out of retirement and he will play two disappointing seasons back in Philadelphia before going to Oakland as a free agent to finish his major league career.

The Mets, in one of the worst trades in franchise history, deal outfielder Amos Otis to the Royals for third baseman Joe Foy. The 22 year-old flycatcher will go on to have an outstanding 14-year career with Kansas City and will become a member of the team’s hall of fame, while Foy will play just one season in New York, hitting a meager .236 in 99 games.

Richards claimed to have had the backing of owners Bob Smith and Roy Hofheinz but the Braves shoot down the idea as a joke that got out of hand. Had it been consumated, future Hall of Famers like Hank Aaron, Phil Niekro and Eddie Mathews could have been Astros.
