On December 7, 1962, J.G. Taylor Spink, the publisher of The Sporting News, dies at the age of 74. The legendary Spink operated the weekly newspaper for 48 years. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will eventually name its annual writers award after Spink.
Tom Tresh, the Yankees shortstop and left fielder, is selected as the American League’s Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA. The 24 year-old son of former major league catcher Mike Tresh gets 13 of the 20 votes cast by the writers, with Bob Rodgers (4), Dean Chance (1), Dick Radatz (1), and Bernie Allen (1) also receiving consideration.

Tony Kubek (.297, 3, 39) is selected over Boston’s infielder Frank Malzone (.292, 15, 103) by the BBWAA as the American League Rookie of the Year. Much to the dismay of the 27 year-old Red Sox Gold Glove All-Star third baseman, he becomes ineligible when the writers, during the season, change the minimum number of career at-bats to determine rookie status.
1949 – After ten years in pinstripes‚ Charlie “King Kong” Keller is released by the Yankees. He’ll sign for a season in Detroit.
1947 – Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench is born in Oklahoma City, OK.
1946 – The Indians send young OF Gene Woodling to Pittsburgh for veteran receiver Al Lopez. Lopez will play just 61 games next season‚ before taking over as manager of Indianapolis for three seasons. He will return to skipper the Indians in 1951.
