The Phillies trade outfielders Jay Johnstone and Bobby Brown to the Yankees for right-hander Rawly Eastwick. Philadelphia’s new reliever will compile a 2-1 record this season, appearing in 51 games.
The Angels trade Denny Doyle to the Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later (Chuck Minor) and cash. Boston’s new slick-fielding second baseman will play a pivotal role in the team’s championship season, compiling a 22-game hitting streak and batting .310 after arriving from California.
On June 14, 1974, Nolan Ryan of the California Angels throws 235 pitches and strikes out 19 batters in a 13-inning stint against the Boston Red Sox. 6/14/1972: Matty Alou of St. Louis homered off LA’s Don Sutton in the third inning. It came with no one on and one out, but was rained out at Busch Stadium.
1969 – Reggie Jackson of the Oakland Athletics collects 10 RBI with two home runs, a double and two singles against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. In the 8th inning, Jackson drives in three runs with a single when he easily could have made second base. Oakland wins, 21 – 7.
1966 – 19-year-old Larry Dierker outduels Hall-of-Famer Sandy Koufax for a 3-0 whitewash of the Dodgers. Dierker surrenders just five hits. A two-run single by Chuck Harrison and a solo shot by Bob Aspromonte supply the offense.
1966 – The Miami Marlins and St. Petersburg Cardinals play the longest game in organized baseball history up to that point, needing 29 innings for Miami to prevail, 4 – 3. The game ends in the early hours of June 15th, after 6 hours and 59 minutes. It remains the longest game ever played without interruption, and only the longest game in baseball history, begun on April 18, 1981 but completed a number of weeks later, has gone more innings since.
Reds starter Jim Maloney, who strikes out 18 batters, no-hits the Mets for ten innings, but loses 1-0 when Johnny Lewis connects for a homer in the eleventh in the Crosley Field contest. In August at Wrigley Field, the right-hander will once again give up no hits through the first nine innings, but this time will record a no-hitter when his teammate Leo Cardenas connects in the top of the tenth, providing the only run in Cincinnati’s 1-0 victory over Chicago.
1963 – Duke Snider hits his 400th career home run off Bob Purkey to highlight a 10 – 3 triumph by the New York Mets over the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field.
