Second baseman Steve Sax of the Los Angeles Dodgers is named National League Rookie of the Year, becoming the fourth consecutive player from the Dodgers to win the award. Sax hit .282 and stole 49 bases as the replacement for Davey Lopes in the Dodgers’ infield.

In the completion of a game suspended the previous day after 17 innings, the Dodgers beat the Cubs, 2 – 1 in 21 innings despite running out of position players and having to use pitchers Fernando Valenzuela and Bob Welch in the outfield. Jerry Reuss pitches the final four innings for the win, then starts the regularly-scheduled game and wins again, 7 – 4.

1982 – Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies goes 5 for 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, tying Max Carey for the most five-hit games in National League history. Rose’s latest five-hit performance helps the Phillies to a 9 – 3 win.
1982 – Pitcher Fernando Valenzuela ends his holdout and reports to the Dodgers spring training camp in Vero Beach, Florida. In 1981, Valenzuela captured the National League Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards after winning 13 games with a 2.48 ERA and 180 strikeouts during the strike-shortened season. After earning just $42,500 in his rookie season, Valenzuela had asked for a raise to $1 million this year. The Dodgers unilaterally renewed his contract for a reported $350,000 instead.
