1966 – Maury Wills leaves the Los Angeles Dodgers club touring in Japan, complaining that his injured right knee needs immediate treatment in the U.S. On December 1st, the Dodgers will send Wills to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
1966 World Series Baltimore will sweep the Dodgers – Luis Aparicio & Maury Wills. aparicio goes 4-16 and Wills 1-13.
St. Louis hosts a hot midsummer All-Star classic. Maury Wills’ 10th-inning single scores Tim McCarver, as the National League wins, 2 – 1, in 105-degree heat. Brooks Robinson’s stellar game (3 hits, eight chances) earns him the game MVP award. Asked about the new ballpark, Casey Stengel remarks, “it holds the heat well.” On-field temperature is 113 degrees.
1966 – The first major league game on artificial turf is played in the Astrodome. Two future Hall-of-Famers face off. 21-year-old rookie Don Sutton stymies Robin Roberts and the Astros for a 6-3 Dodger win, the first of his career. The infield was carpeted with the Monsanto product Judge Roy Hofheinz dubbed “Astroturf”. The outfield and foul grounds were still dirt but had the zippered sod installed after the homestand.
Sandy Koufax declines to pitch the first game of the World Series against the Twins because the scheduled game occurs Yom Kippur, the most sacred of the Jewish holidays. As the Dodger southpaw attends shul and fasts on the Day of Atonement, Don Drysdale gives up seven runs in three innings in the team’s 8-2 loss at Minnesota’s Metropolitan Stadium.

1962 – Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Maury Wills, whose 104 stolen bases broke a major league season-record set by Ty Cobb, wins the NL Most Valuable Player Award. In a controversial vote, Wills beats out teammate Tommy Davis, who led the NL with a .346 batting average and 153 RBI.
At Dodger Stadium, the Giants beat Los Angeles, 6-4, to take the rubber game of the best-of-three National League playoffs, clinching the National League pennant. LA shortstop Maury Wills sets a major league record for the most games played in a season, appearing in all of his team’s 165 games.
