On September 3, 1960, Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers faces San Francisco Giants left-hander Mike McCormick in a classic pitching duel. Koufax surrenders a solo home run to Giants outfielder Felipe Alou, who accounts for the only run of the game in San Franciscoās 1-0 victory.
Despite giving up a hit in the bottom of the sixth in the Giantsā 3-0 victory over Philadelphia, Mike McCormick is credited with a no-hitter when the game is rained out, and the inning is never completed, statistically erasing the hit. Due to a rule change in 1991 that mandates a game must last for at least nine innings for the hitless effort to be called an official no-hitter, the right-handerās five-inning rain-shortened outing no longer appears in the record book as a no-no.
