1956 – Led by Nellie Fox’s seven straight hits, the White Sox sweep the Yankees. Mickey Mantle has a bunt single, triple and home run in the 6 – 4 nightcap loss but trails Fox in season hits, 158 to 155. But the Mick still leads in the Triple Crown race.

8/13/1954 – In a 16-inning game in which the home-standing White Sox beat the Tigers, 1-0, substitute first-sacker Wayne Belardi batted out of turn. Reno Bertoia pinch ran for fifth-place hitting first baseman Walt Dropo in the thirteenth inning and stayed in the game playing second base. Belardi entered the game in the eighth spot at that time. In the fifteenth inning after fourth-place hitter Ray Boone had walked with one out, Belardi came to the plate in Bertoia’s spot and fouled out to the catcher. Detroit realized their mistake and sent Belardi up again the next inning and he successfully sacrificed catcher Red Wilson to second base. Both pitchers, Al Aber for Detroit and Jack Harshman for Chicago, pitched complete games.
At Fenway Park, the Red Sox celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first American League game in Boston. On hand are 29 old-timers who played, managed, or umpired in the AL in that first year including Connie Mack, Dummy Hoy, Cy Young, Hugh Duffy, Clark Griffith, Tom Connolly, Billy Sullivan, Wid Conroy, Bill Bradley and Ollie Pickering. Eight of the 29 participated in the first AL game, played in Chicago on April 24, 1901. The game that follows the ceremony features dramatic home runs as Ted Williams hits the 300th homer of his career in the 4th inning against Chicago’s Howie Judson. With Williams up in the 8th inning, White Sox manager Paul Richards moves reliever Harry Dorish to 3B and brings in Billy Pierce to pitch to Ted. Williams pops up against the lefty, and Dorish then returns to the mound. Boston ties the game against Dorish at 7 – 7, but little Nellie Fox, playing in his 6th season, cracks his first major league homer in the 11th to give Dorish a 9 – 7 victory. Ray Scarborough is the loser. The Sox will win their next 13 games.
In one of their best trades in franchise history, the White Sox obtain future Hall of Famer Nellie Fox from the A’s in exchange for catcher Joe Tipton. The hard-nosed second baseman will lead the league in hits four times and will win the 1959 American League MVP during his 14-year tenure with the team.
1927 – Jacob Nelson “Nellie” Fox is born in St. Thomas, PA. Before winding up his playing career in Houston, Fox had been a 12-time All-Star for the Chicago White Sox, winning American League MVP honors in 1959. He died of skin cancer on December 1, 1975 in Baltimore, MD at age 48. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1997.
