The Mets send right-handed starter Walt Terrell to the Tigers in exchange for infielder Howard Johnson. New York’s new third baseman will spend nine years with the club and will return to the organization to become a minor league manager and big league coach.
On November 20, 1984, Four days after his 20th birthday, New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest player ever to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Dwight Gooden becomes the second consecutive Met player to be named the National League’s Rookie of Year. The 19 year-old right-hander, who compiled a 17-9 record along with a 1.53 ERA and a league-leading 268 strikeouts, joins his teammate and close friend Darryl Strawberry to be honored the coveted freshman award.
At Shea Stadium, the Mets’ Rusty Staub homers to become the second player to homer as a teenager and also at the age of 40. Ty Cobb is the only other, and Gary Sheffield will match the feat in 2009. Staub’s blast, a two-run pinch homer, climaxes a four-run 9th inning as the Mets beat Philly, 6 – 4.
Dwight Gooden strikes out 16 batters for the second straight start to tie the major-league record of 32 strikeouts in consecutive games, but balks home the winning run in the 8th inning of a 2 – 1 loss to the Phillies. It is Gooden’s 5th straight outing with 10 or more strikeouts.
Striking out Marvell Wynne in the sixth inning, Dwight Gooden breaks the season strikeout record for a rookie. By whiffing 16 Pirates, Doc’s total of 251 is six more than Herb Score’s 1955 mark.
On his way to hurling a one-hitter, Dwight ‘Doc’ Gooden fans Cub Ron Cey for his 228th strikeout, setting a National League rookie record. The Mets phenom passes Grover Cleveland Alexander, who established the mark in 1911 with 227.
1984 – Mark Bailey overcomes two questionable ninth-inning calls to lead a 3-2 triumph over the Mets. Jobbed by a bad call at the plate that gave New York a 2-1 lead in top of the ninth, Bailey gets revenge with a two-run blast off Doug Sisk that caps an emotional night where fines are passed out to players on both squads.
Umpire Joe West ejects two television cameramen from Shea Stadium when they allow the Mets to view replays of a controversial play at the plate in which Hubie Brooks is called out. The Mets beat Atlanta, 3 – 1, with Ron Darling getting the win.
