In a major coup, the Yankees grab American League stolen bases leader Jacoby Ellsbury from their rivals the Red Sox, signing him to a seven-year deal worth $153 million. The Sox lose another starter from last year’s Championship team, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who moves to the Marlins for $21 million over three years, but replace him with veteran backstop A.J. Pierzynski, plucked from the Rangers on a one-year deal. The other big signing is reliever Joe Nathan, who moves to the Tigers on a two-year contract.

Happ in the 1st inning of a Grapefruit League game in Tampa, FL. The Yanks’ most prolific home run hitter over the past two seasons is expected to be out for 10 weeks.
Brien Taylor, a former top Yankees pitching prospect who received a record $1.55 million signing bonus, is sentenced to 38 months in prison after pleading guilty to distributing crack cocaine. The East Carteret High School’s hard-throwing southpaw was the No. 1 overall selection in the 1991 draft, but two years later his career was cut short when he got into a fist fight, severely injuring his pitching shoulder when he throw a punch which missed his opponent.
The Mariners sign Japanese P Hisashi Iwakuma to a one-year contract as a free agent. Iwakuma had gone through the posting system a year ago, but the 2008 Pacific League MVP failed to agree on a contract with the winning bidders, the Oakland A’s. For their part, the Yankees announce they have been unable to reach an agreement with SS Hiroyuki Nakajima, whose rights they secured through the posting system last month; Nakajima will return to play for the Seibu Lions this season.

Video replay of the at-bat, that clearly shows the fastball hit the knob of the bat, prompts a national debate about the ethics demonstrated by the usually squeaky-clean Yankees captain, who admitted after the 4-3 loss to Tampa that he pretended to get hit by the pitch to get on base.
