2018 – The Indians trade All-Star C Yan Gomes to the Nationals in return for three prospects headed by P Jefry Rodriguez. In another deal, the Mariners send RP Alex Colome to the White Sox for C Omar Narvaez.
2016 – Major League Baseball owners and the Players’ Association agree on a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement. Highlights of the deal include: a raise in the threshold for luxury tax payments to $195 million in 2017, gradually rising to reach $210 million in 2021; the All-Star Game will no longer determine home field advantage for the World Series; and teams will no longer forfeit a first-round pick in the amateur draft if they sign a premium free agent. There is no agreement on instituting an international draft; instead, teams will have an annual $6 million bonus pool limit for international signings. The deal ensures that labor peace in MLB will have exceeded a quarter of a century by the time the agreement expires.
2013 – Reports indicate that the Twins have signed their second free agent starting pitcher in less than a week, coming to an agreement with Phil Hughes on a three-year contract worth $24 million. Hughes will still need to be pass a physical exam before the deal becomes official.
Mets third baseman David Wright agrees to an eight-year, $138 million contract, the richest deal in franchise history. The 29 year-old six-time All-Star is the team’s all-time leader in hits, doubles, extra-base hits, walks, RBIs, and runs scored.
Atlanta trades P Tommy Hanson to the Angels for P Jordan Walden.
The Cubs sign free agent OF David DeJesus to a two-year contract.
Yomiuri Giants starter Hirokazu Sawamura, with a 2.03 ERA in 2011, is the runaway winner of the 2011 Central League Rookie of the Year Award. He is the fourth straight Yomiuri winner, following Tetsuya Yamaguchi, Tetsuya Matsumoto and Hisayoshi Chono. Seibu Lions closer Kazuhisa Makita takes home the 2011 Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award, while long-hyped Yuki Saito gets just 3 of 214 votes and places fourth.
The Angels acquire C Chris Iannetta from the Rockies for P Tyler Chatwood. The Rockies then sign Ramon Hernandez to be their new catcher.
Troy Tulowitzki and the Rockies agree to a seven-year extension that guarantees the All-Star infielder $157.75 million until 2020. The 26 year-old Gold Glove shortstop’s contract is now the eighth richest in baseball history.
The Dodgers trade IF Ryan Theriot to St. Louis for P Blake Hawksworth, while St. Louis signs P Brian Tallet from Toronto.
