Boston Red Sox rookie Babe Ruth grounds out as a pinch hitter in the 9th inning of the opener. Ruth will sit out the rest of the Series, and the Phillies won’t win another game in the Fall Classic until Game 1 of the 1980 World Series.
The Phillies clinch their first National League pennant when Grover Cleveland Alexander tosses a one-hitter, blanking Boston at Braves Field, 5-0. It will take another 35 years before the franchise wins another flag.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Gavvy Cravath ties a major league record with four doubles against the Cincinnati Reds. Philadelphia wins, 14 – 7. Two of Gavvy’s doubles come with the bases loaded‚ a major league record‚ and the only time this century that someone has doubled with the sacks full twice in a game. Grover Cleveland Alexander coasts home to the win.
The Cubs end Grover Cleveland Alexander’s 9-game win streak, 4 – 0. Chicago and Philadelphia are deadlocked for the National Leaguelead.
Pete Alexander wins his 9th in a row for the Phils, shutting out the visiting Cardinals, 8 – 0. The Phils move into first place in the National League with the victory, and will remain there for the rest of the season, winning the franchise’ first-ever NL Pennant.
1915 – Phillie ace Grover Alexander continues his masterful pitching, topping Brooklyn’s Jack Coombs, 4 – 0. Zack Wheat’s 8th-inning single is the only Robin safety.
Grover Cleveland Alexander allows two hits in the 1st inning and none in the next eight innings, but the match-up with the Giants’ Rube Marquard ends in a 1 – 1 tie.
Pete Alexander wins his 9th in a row for the Phils, beating the Reds, 7 – 4. Gavvy Cravath hits his 18th homer, off King Lear, and Sherry Magee clouts his 15th.
1913 – The Phils score the only run this afternoon in a doubleheader in Boston. The visitors win the opener, 1 – 0, then the two play 10 innings of scoreless baseball before the game is called. Grover Cleveland Alexander misses his 20th win, but will reach the mark in three days.
