Woody Woodward goes deep for his only major league homer

Reds SS Woody Woodward goes deep for his first and only major league homer, off Ron Reed in Atlanta. It comes in his 684th game. It is too little as the Braves top the Reds, 11 – 9. The Reds take the nitecap, 3 – 1, scoring two runs when Pat Corrales hits a long drive that glances off the glove of Hank Aaron and over the fence for a home run. Pete Rose is 5 for 5, all singles.

Bob Gibson wins the 1968 National League Most Valuable Player Award

Bob Gibson (22-9, 268 strikeouts, 1.12 ERA) wins the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award, edging out Reds infielder Pete Rose. The Cardinals’ right-hander was also the unanimous winner of the Senior Circuit’s Cy Young Award when he garnered all 20 of the first-place votes cast by the BBWAA.

The National League wins the 1968 All Star Game 1-0 at the Astrodome

Appropriately, pitching dominates the All-Star Game in the first All-Star Game played indoors. Willie Mays, playing in place of the injured Pete Rose, tallies an unearned run in the 1st inning against American Leaguestarter Luis Tiant to complete the scoring for the day – the first All-Star effort to end 1 – 0. Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Ron Reed and Jerry Koosman hold the American League to three hits.
