On June 4, 1989, Barry Bonds of the Pittsburgh Pirates hits his first major league home run in a 12-3 shellacking of the Atlanta Braves. The home run is one of four hits that Bonds collects in five at-bats.
The eventual owner of Major League Baseball’s home run record started his career going 0-for-5 for the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 30, 1986. the Pirates fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-4, in 11 innings at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.
At Wrigley Field, the Pirates and Cubs go 13 innings and end 8 – 8 as darkness calls the game. It will be finished August 11th.
Jim Leyland, who will become a mainstay in the Bucs’ dugout for 11 seasons, replaces Chuck Tanner as the manager of the Pirates. Pittsburgh finished in last place this season, compiling a woeful record of 57-104.

1984 – St. Louis sends slugger George Hendrick and a minor leaguer to the Pirates for P John Tudor and C Brian Harper. Tudor, at 12-11, was the ace of the Bucs’ staff, which set a record by having the National League’s best ERA even though the team finished last. The 35-year-old Hendrick will play just a half season in the Iron City before going to California.
1984 – Rick Sutcliffe pitches a two-hitter in a 4 – 1 win over Pittsburgh to clinch the National League East title for the Cubs, who will be making their first post-season appearance since 1945. The win is Sutcliffe’s 14th in a row. Sutcliffe strikes out nine Bucs, including Joe Orsulak for the final out.
Striking out Marvell Wynne in the sixth inning, Dwight Gooden breaks the season strikeout record for a rookie. By whiffing 16 Pirates, Doc’s total of 251 is six more than Herb Score’s 1955 mark.
