Grover Cleveland Alexander allows two hits in the 1st inning and none in the next eight innings, but the match-up with the Giants’ Rube Marquard ends in a 1 – 1 tie.
1915 – At the Polo Grounds, Babe Ruth and the well-traveled Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, 7 – 1. It is the last stop on a 29-day road trip for the Red Sox. Ruth allows five hits and hits his second career home run, a three-run shot off Jack Warhop in the 2nd inning. After his homer, Ruth receives two intentional walks. He ends up kicking the bench and breaking his toe, sidelining him for two weeks.
On May 6, 1915, Boston Red Sox rookie Babe Ruth hits his first major league home run. Ruth connects against Jack Warhop of the New York Yankees at the Polo Grounds. Ruth will go on to hit 714 home runs, a mark that will stand until surpassed by Hank Aaron.
1914 – At the Polo Grounds, Christy Mathewson stops Brooklyn on seven hits and the Giants schmeer Charlie Schmutz, 3 – 0.
The Giants lose 1 – 0 to the Cardinals, managing just three hits off Bill Doak, but win game two on a 2-hitter by Christy Mathewson over Slim Sallee. The 4 – 0 win is Matty’s 20th.
At the Polo Grounds, 32,000 watch as Lefty Tyler and Christy Mathewson throw goose eggs for nine innings. In the 10th, Red Smith singles and Hank Gowdy triples him home. Matty then wild pitches Gowdy home for 2 – 0 lead. New York loads the bases in the 10th with no outs, but Tyler slams the door with no Giants scoring. The Braves now trail by 3 1/2.
In the seventh inning of the 4-1 loss to Detroit at the Polo Grounds, Yankees’ catcher Les Nunamaker is has three assists to become the first catcher to accomplish the feat since 1887. The 25 year-old guns down Sam Crawford and Bobby Veach trying to steal, and picks off Hugh High leading off second base in the frame, marking the only time this century a backstop will be credited with three assists.
On October 11, 1913, At The Polo Grounds, the Philadelphia Athletics win the World Series as Eddie Plank outduels New York Giants pitching great Christy Mathewson in Game Five.
