Braun hit .332 with 33 homers and 111 RBI as the Brewers won the AL Central title for the first time. He outpolls Los Angeles’ Matt Kemp who flirted with a Triple Crown but whose team was left far out of the running for a postseason slot.

Brian Maughan’s piece of art, which portrays Selig with his right arm extended with his hand holding a baseball, joins the sculptures of Robin Yount and Hank Aaron in front of the Milwaukee ballpark.

In their first year of eligibility, George Brett, Nolan Ryan and Robin Yount are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Carlton Fisk finishes fourth in the voting, missing election by 43 votes. It is the only time since the first inductees were selected in 1939 that more than two first-timers have made it into Cooperstown in the same year.

In front of a sellout crowd at County Stadium, Robin Yount becomes the 17th and third youngest player to reach the 3000 hits milestone when he singles off of Indian reliever Jose Mesa in a 5-4 defeat to Cleveland. The 36 year-old Milwaukee center fielder also reached 1,000 and 2,000 hit plateaus against the Indians.
