On July 22, 1957, former manager Joe McCarthy is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He and fellow inductee Sam Crawford are in Cooperstown with five other Hall of Famers for the ceremony.

In the 1st inning of a 9 – 0 win over the Athletics at Detroit, Ty Cobb walks, then on consecutive pitches steals second base, third base, and home off lefty Harry Krause. Twice he beats perfect throws by C Ira Thomas. After Cobb reaches on a fielder’s choice in the 3rd, Sam Crawford homers. In the 7th, Cobb walks, is bunted to second, and scores on a sacrifice fly, knocking the ball out of the hands of the new catcher, Paddy Livingston.
1910 – The touring Detroit Tigers, with Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford in the lineup, play an exhibition game in Havana, Cuba. With George Mullin pitching, the Tigers beat Almendares, 4 – 0.

1909 – Ty Cobb clinches the American League home run title with his 9th round-tripper. It is an inside-the-park drive against the Browns. In fact, all his nine home runs this season are inside-the-park, including two on July 15th. Only Sam Crawford (12 in 1901) has hit more inside-the-park homers in a year than Cobb.
1908 – The Detroit Tigers turn a triple play against the Boston Red Sox for the second day in a row, but Boston wins, 9 – 5. The two tri-killings in two games is a unique major league record.
