1984 – The White Sox trade 1983 AL Cy Young Award winner LaMarr Hoyt and two minor leaguers to the Padres for pitcher Tim Lollar, utility man Luis Salazar, and minor leaguers Ozzie Guillen and Bill Long. Guillen will win the American League Rookie of the Year Award next season.
With the Tigers leading 5-4 in the eighth inning of Game 5 of the World Series, Kirk Gibson hits his second home run of the game, a three-run blast to the upper deck in right field, putting the game out of reach to give the Motor City its fourth World Championship in franchise history. Padres manager Dick Williams had ordered his pitcher to intentionally walk the Detroit right fielder, but Goose Gossage, after ignoring the walk sign at first, convinces his skipper he can get the slugger out, only to be proven wrong two pitches later.
1984 – A pair of two-run home runs by Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers provide all the scoring as pitcher Jack Morris beats the San Diego Padres, 4 – 2, in Game 4 of the World Series. The Tigers are now just one win away from the title.
1984 – San Diego Padres pitchers tie a World Series record by issuing 11 bases on balls in a 5 – 2 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 3. Detroit takes a 2-1 Series lead.
1984 – The San Diego Padres win the National League pennant with a 6 – 3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the final game of the [[[1984 NLCS|NLCS]]. The Padres win three straight after dropping the first two at Wrigley Field.
Steve Garvey’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gives the Padres a 7-5 walk-off win over the Cubs in Game 4 of NLCS. After losing the first two contests of the best-of-five NLCS, the victory brings the series to a decisive fifth game that San Diego will win to capture the National League pennant.
With a 5-4 victory over San Francisco at Jack Murphy Stadium, the Padres win their first division crown. In addition to winning the clincher, Tim Lollar hits a three-run home run in the second inning to help his cause.
In one of the ugliest brawl-filled games in major league history‚ the Braves beat the Padres, 5 – 3, in Atlanta. The trouble begins when Atlanta’s Pascual Perez hits Alan Wiggins in the back with the first pitch of the game‚ and escalates as the Padres pitchers retaliate by throwing at Perez all four times he comes to the plate. All in all‚ the game features two bench-clearing brawls‚ the second of which includes several fans‚ and 19 ejections‚ including both managers and both replacement managers. Padres manager Dick Williams will be suspended for 10 days and fined $10‚000‚ while Braves manager Joe Torre and 5 players will each receive three-game suspensions. But the brawl in Atlanta‚ as Dave Campbell later observes‚ “woke the Padres up out of their doldrums.”
Alan Wiggins of the San Diego Padres ties a National League record by stealing five bases in one game. Wiggins joins three others who have performed the feat: Dan McGann in 1904, Davey Lopes in 1974 and Lonnie Smith in 1982.
1984 – The New York Yankees trade one of the key members of their last World Championship teams when they dispatch Graig Nettles to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Dennis Rasmussen and a player to be named. Nettles, who had angered Yankees owner George Steinbrenner by criticizing him in a book, will hit 20 home runs and help the Padres reach the 1984 World Series.
