After a ten-day delay due to the Loma Prieta earthquake, the World Series resumes with the A’s beating the Giants in Game 3, 13-7. Oakland joins the 1928 Yankees as only the second team in major league history to hit five home runs in a Fall Classic contest.

1989 – The Giants win their first National League pennant since 1962 by defeating the Cubs, 3 – 2, in Game 5 of the NLCS. Will Clark bats .650 in the series with eight RBI to win MVP honors.
In his second start after coming back from cancer surgery, Giant Dave Dravecky suffers a broken arm beating the Expos, 3 – 2. The Youngstown, Ohio native collapses to the ground and clutches his left arm in severe pain after throwing a wild pitch to Tim Raines. The bone will heal but Dravecky will break it again during the Giants on-field celebration when they clinch the pennant later that season. Dravecky will not pitch again in the major leagues.
After fifteen months of recovery from cancer surgery to his arm, Dave Dravecky pitches one-hit baseball for seven innings, blanking the Reds to get the victory. The Giant bullpen holds on for a 4-3 win at Candlestick Park.
The Cubs lose to the Giants, 4 – 3 when a rally falls short. Jerome Walton is tagged for the last out as he is crawling to 3B. Walton injures his hamstring on the play and will miss a month, then come back to win the Rookie of the Year Award.
After overrunning Cardinal shortstop Ozzie Smith’s fly ball down in the left-field corner, Giants outfielder Kevin Mitchell recovers by reaching back and catching the ball in foul territory with his bare right hand. The National League’s eventual MVP’s amazing play occurs in the first inning of the Giants’ 3-1 loss to the Redbirds at Busch Stadium.
Chris Speier hits for the cycle and Ernest Riles hits the 10,000th home run in Giants history to lead San Francisco to a 21 – 2 rout of the Cardinals. The 21 runs are a San Francisco record. Speier also cycled as an Expo in 1978, just the 4th major leaguer to do so for two teams. He joins Joe Cronin (Washington, 1929; Red Sox, 1940), Babe Herman (Dodgers, 1931; Cubs, 1933) and Bob Watson (Astros, 1977; Boston, 1979).
Former Indian outfielder Brett Butler signs a two-year, $1.8 million free-agent deal with the Giants. The 31 year-old leadoff hitter, who will play a vital role when San Francisco captures the NL pennant in 1989, replaces Chili Davis, who signed with the Angels, as the team’s center fielder.
