1985 – In an effort to add some much-needed power to a lineup essentially composed of speedsters, the St. Louis Cardinals trade OF/1B David Green, SS Jose Uribe (who is still known as “Jose Gonzalez”), P Dave LaPoint, and OF/1B Gary Rajsich to the San Francisco Giants for slugging OF/1B Jack Clark.
With a 5-4 victory over San Francisco at Jack Murphy Stadium, the Padres win their first division crown. In addition to winning the clincher, Tim Lollar hits a three-run home run in the second inning to help his cause.
1984 – The Giants trade veteran 1B Al Oliver, whom they acquired from Montreal in February, and pitcher Renie Martin to the Phillies for P George Riley and minor leaguer Kelly Downs.
1984 – Enos Cabell, Phil Garner and Jose Cruz slug back-to-back-to-back homers off Mark Davis to highlight a nine-run inning that dooms the Giants, 10-3, at Candlestick Park. Cruz homers again to ice the cake. Shortstop Bert Pena gets his first two big league RBIs on two separate singles in the fateful fifth inning.
1984 – Bill Doran slaps two triples and drives in four to spark a 10-3 victory over the Giants. Mark Bailey adds a home run. Mike Scott delivers two hits of his own while winning his fourth of the year.
1984 – Jerry Mumphrey and Craig Reynolds crack two-run homers to pace the Astros to a 14-5 thumping in San Francisco. Terry Puhl has four hits while Jose Cruz and Bill Doran each contribute three. Joe Niekro is the beneficiary.
1984 – The San Francisco Giants send pitcher Fred Breining and outfielder Max Venable to the Montreal Expos in exchange for first baseman Al Oliver. Because Breining is found to be injured, the Giants will send pitcher Andy McGaffigan to Montreal on March 31st to complete the trade.
After vetoing a trade to Oakland, two-time All-Star Dusty Baker is waived by the Dodgers. The 35 year-old outfielder will sign as a free agent, hitting .294 in 100 games, with the Giants, before ending his career with the A’s, the team he had refused to play for when dealt last season.
On June 5, 1983, Chili Davis hit a home run from each side of the plate in the same game, the first of nine such games in his career, and the first ever by a player from the San Francisco Giants.
