1953 – The Pittsburgh Pirates send flashy 2B Danny O’Connell to the Milwaukee Braves for 3B Sid Gordon, OF Sam Jethroe, P Max Surkont, and four minor league pitchers. Pittsburgh also get $100,000 from the Braves. This is the only six-for-one trade in major league history and will be surpassed only by the seven-for-one deal that will send Vida Blue from the Oakland A’s to the SF Giants in 1978.
Led by OF Jim Pendleton’s three home runs, the Braves tie the Yankees’ 1939 major-league record for the most homers in a game with eight in their 19 – 4 win over Pittsburgh in the first game of a doubleheader. Pendleton is only the second rookie in history to hit three home runs in one game. In game two of the doubleheader, the Braves hit four more long balls to win 11 – 5. The 12 homers in a doubleheader shatter the previous mark of 9. Eddie Mathews’s four dingers for the day give him a National League-leading 43; he will end the season with 47 home runs, 30 of them on the road to set a major-league record.
Sid Gordon of the Braves goes 5 for 8 in the first game of a doubleheader that goes 17 innings‚ as Boston loses, 7 – 6, at Philadelphia. Phils starter Robin Roberts trails 6 – 2 after 8 innings but stays the distance, pitching 17 innings for the win. Del Ennis ends the game with a leadoff homer in the 17th. This is the third 17-inning effort in 2 years.
The Dodgers take the first of two games against the Braves‚ winning, 8 – 1, behind Ralph Branca. The Braves take the nitecap‚ 8 – 4‚ behind Max Surkont and a home run by Sid Gordon. With Red Barber and Connie Desmond making the calls‚ the doubleheader is the first major league game to be telecast in color.

1950 – Sid Gordon of the Boston Braves hits the first National League grand slam of the season, as Boston beats the New York Giants, 10 – 6, at the Polo Grounds. There will be 35 grand slams in the league and 68 in all this year. Both are records but both will later be topped.
In a major trade, the New York Giants get Alvin Dark and Eddie Stanky from the Boston Braves in a swap for Willard Marshall, Sid Gordon, Buddy Kerr and Sam Webb.
