1955 – The Red Sox beat the Yankees, 8 – 1, as Ted Williams goes 1 for 2. Williams finishes the season at .356, well ahead of Al Kaline’s .340, but does not have enough at bats to win the batting title. The same thing happened in 1954. Williams was walked 136 times in 1954 and 71 times (an American League-leading 17 were intentional) this year. A rule change will be made to recognize plate appearances, not times at bat, to determine the batting champion.

American League catcher Yogi Berra complains about his feet hurting and Musial tells him “Don’t worry, I’ll have you home in a minute”… then “the Man” hits a game-winning home run on the next pitch. The American League had taken a five-run lead on a three-run homer by Mickey Mantle off Robin Roberts, only to see the NL tie it. Braves P Gene Conley strikes out the side in the 12th to get credit for the win.

1954 – Boston Red Sox star Ted Williams fractures his collarbone on the first day of spring training. The injury occurs as Williams dives for a ball hit by teammate Hoot Evers. As a result, the injury will force Williams to miss Opening Day and will keep him out of Boston lineup until May 15th.
