Ray Caldwell’s gets arrested after nine and two-thirds innings of five-hit relief

On July 10, 1917 — Thanks to Ray Caldwell’s nine and two-thirds innings of five-hit relief, the Yankees beat the Browns in St. Louis, 7-5 in a 17 inning game. Later in the day, the St. Louis police arrest the hard-living right-hander, charging him with grand larceny for allegedly stealing a diamond ring from Lucy L. Dick on June 30, the ring reportedly is worth $150. Caldwell admitted to the crime telling the police the ring was in Cleveland and was released on bond. New York tried to sell Caldwell off to St Louis earlier in the day.
