The Astros acquire veteran righthander Rick Rhoden from the Yankees for three minor leaguers

On January 10, 1989 — The Houston Astros acquire veteran righthander Rick Rhoden from the Yankees for Pedro DeLeon (minors), Mike Hook (minors) and John Fishel. Rhoden starts 20 games and will go 2-6 with a 4.28 ERA in his final season in a 15-year career.

Rhoden will end his career with 159 wins, but he was known as a good hitting pitcher. He hit 9 homeruns and batted .238 over his career. Rhoden even during the DH era was used as a pinch hitter by the Yankees in 1988.

Before rejoining the Yankees to make a start in Chicago, Columbus Clipper starter Mariano Rivera pitches a five-inning no-hitter against the IL’s Rochester Red Wings in Ohio’s Cooper Stadium. During his tenure in the minor leagues, Mo, the future major league leader in career saves, is used primarily as a starter, starting 68 games, including seven complete contests, en route to compiling a 27-18 record along with a 2.35 ERA.

June 26, 1995

Luis Tiant (10-4) pitches his 4th straight shutout, beating the Brewers, 2 – 0, in the opener. Carl Yastrzemski’s two-run home run accounts for the scoring. The Red Sox lose the nitecap, 6 – 2, as four former Hubmen do the damage. Syd O’Brien and Joe Lahoud homer, Boomer Scott has three hits and Ken Brett is the winner.
