On August 4, 1906 — The Giants slow the Chicago express, stopping the Cubs, 7 – 4, behind Christy Mathewson and Hooks Wiltse. New York is just 4 1/2 games behind Chicago, but the Cubs will go 50-8 from August 1 to outdistance the pack.

A lost homerun . . . . An over-flow crowd at the Polo Grounds was allowed to ring the outfield with a ground rule that any ball hit into (or over) the crowd would be a double. Bill Dahlen of the Giants hit a ball into the left field bleachers to lead off the bottom of the third inning off Cubs pitcher Jack Taylor. A home run on any other day, due to that day’s ground rule, Dahlen was only awarded a double.
