On June 29, 1907 The Pirates top the Cubs, 2 – 1, as CF Tommy Leach cuts down Harry Steinfeldt at the plate in the 9th inning. Deacon Phillippe is the winner.

In a fine contest, which ended amid the wildest excitement, owing to the fact that for a brief moment it looked as if the Champions would at least tie the score and prolong the clash into extra innings, the Pittsburg Pirates won from the Colts, the final score being 2 to 1. Today’s victory was the third in succession for the Pittsburgers over the league leaders. Fred Clarke’s husky aggregation of ball tossers from the City of Smoke turned a trick on the Champions that no other club in the league has been able to do this season beat Chicago’s brigade three times hand-running. Although the game was well-played and exciting throughout, it was not until the ninth that the local fans were given a chance to show their enthusiasm. With two out, Steinfeldt smashed out a two-bagger. Philippe decided that it would be the best policy to pass up Chance, and try his foolers on Kling-, but the stalwart backstop drove the ball to center field, and Steinfeldt started for home with what seemed sure to prove the tying run, and the fans began to have visions of extra innings. But the rooters reckoned without Tommie Leach, the wee outfielder of the Pirates, who was as active as a cat all afternoon. Tommie grabbed the bounding sphere and hurled it to Catcher Gibson at the plate. It was a perfect throw and it had “Steiny” beaten by 20 feet. Gibson hustled up the line toward third and “tabbed him with the ball before he was near home.
