On April 8, 1963 — The Detroit Tigers claim little-known Denny McLain on first-year waivers from the Chicago White Sox, who will regret their decision. After brief stints for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964, McLain will win 108 games from 1965 through 1969 and he will become the game’s last 30-game winner playing in the Motor City, will win the American League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award in 1968 and 1969. He helps Detroit to win the 1968 World Series, its first in 23 years.
