Cleveland Indians starters show up for a “pitching clinic” during a doubleheader sweep of the Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Stadium. Veteran Bob Feller pitches hitless ball for 6+ innings and hurls his major league record 12th one-hitter in a 2 – 0 victory in the opener, and in the nitecap rookie Herb Score strikes out the first nine batters (for a total of 16) en route to a 2 – 1 four-hit victory.

May 1, 1955

The Pirates take a two games to one lead in the NLDS with a 5 – 3 win over St. Louis at home. Pedro Alvarez drives in the go-ahead run in the 8th after Carlos Beltran twice ties the score for the Cards, with a two-run single in the 5th, and a solo homer off Mark Melancon in the top of the 8th. The homer is the 16th in postseason play for Beltran, and he now only trails Mickey Mantle, with 18, in that category.

In the first of two at Philadelphia, Ken Heintzelman tosses a one-hitter to beat the Giants, 8 – 1. The only hit is Whitey Lockman’s 7th-inning triple. The Phils take the nitecap, 7 – 5, as Ed Heusser pitches five innings of relief to win. Larry Jansen and Clint Hartung take the losses.
