Roger Clemens asks for $22 million in salary arbitration the highest amount ever.

 

On January 17 2005 — With the Houston Astros offering $13.5 million, Roger Clemens asks for $22 million in salary arbitration. The amount, which would make Clemens the highest-paid pitcher in major league history, surpasses the previous record amount submitted for arbitration of $18.5 million by New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter in 2001. They will settle on $18M. The 42 year old will post a league leading 1.87 ERA, and finish 3rd in the Cy Young Award voting.  Chris Carpenter will win the award but clemens WAR was 1 game better than Carpenter.
