7/31/1924: Kiki Cuyler lost a home run when a game was rained out and the score reverted back to the previous inning. The Pirates were playing in New York when the storm appeared in the third inning. The Giants, behind 5-0 at this point, started stalling to try to prevent the game from becoming official. In the top of the seventh, Cuyler homered into the lower right field seats off Jack Bentley. However, the game was called after a 30-minute rain delay in the bottom of the frame and the seventh inning was wiped off the books.

Cardinals pull off A triple play on first pitch from Bill Sherdel

1924 – Bill Sherdel is called out of the Cardinals bullpen to pitch to pinch-hitter Johnny Mokan of the Phillies. There are no outs in the 2nd with runners on first and second base. Sherdel throws one ball, and Mokan bunts it in the air to Jim Bottomley coming in from first. He throws to SS Jimmy Cooney, who doubles the runner at second base and throws to Rogers Hornsby who goes covering first base. A triple play on one pitch. Sherdel stays in the game until the end and gets the win for the Cards, 9 – 8.

7/28/1924 – The Red Sox were in St. Louis to play the Browns. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ernie Wingard pinch hit for shortstop Wally Gerber (in the eighth spot in the lineup) and singled. Norm McMillan then ran for catcher Hank Severeid (in the seventh spot in the lineup). McMillan remained in the game at shortstop, Tony Rego came in to catch and George Lyons to pitch. McMillan has to be in the seventh spot in the lineup so Rego and Lyons are eight and nine (or reverse). In the bottom of the ninth, after the sixth place hitter doubled, Rego batted at the insistance of home plate umpire Brick Owens and grounded out to end the inning. He was clearly out of order as McMillan should have batted. In the top of the tenth, Boston scored five runs. McMillan batted to start the bottom of the frame (out of order). After the Browns lost, Manager George Sisler protested the game due to the mis-application of the rules by Owens. The protest was upheld and the game declared a no-decision by AL president Ban Johnson.

On Tuberculosis Day at Sportsman’s Park, the Cards’ Jesse Haines hurls his only shutout in two years, a 5 – 0 no-hitter over the Braves. “While the majestic northpaw was realizing his lifelong pitching ambitions, the Cardinals were making merry with the right-hand shoots of McNamara” (St. Louis Globe-Democrat). It is the first no-hitter by a St. Louis hurler since 1876, and the first-ever National League no-hitter in St. Louis.
