With a combination of infielders consisted mostly of shortstop Eddie Joost, second sacker Pete Suder and first baseman Ferris Fain, the A’s established a major-league record for turning 217 double plays. The trio was the subject of a poem written by Dick Armstrong, the Athletics’ publicity director, titled “Joost to Suder to Fain,” which remains popular in the folklore of the franchise.
