2008 – Hunter Pence breaks up a no-hit bid in Los Angeles with a single after two outs in the seventh. The bats wake up and clobber the Dodgers with an 8-5 thrashing. Houston wins their eighth game in their last nine while climbing within 1-1/2 games of the division lead.
At Shea Stadium, a 13-minute delay occurs in the beginning of the ninth of the Mets’ 8-3 victory over the Reds, when David Ross bats out of order, making an out in Corey Patterson’s place in the lineup. The very confused umpires eventually make the correct call, telling Ross to bat again, now with one out, without his teammate having an opportunity to come to the plate.
5/11/2008 – In the top of the ninth, after a double switch, the Reds batted out of order when David Ross hit in Corey Patterson’s spot. Ross flew out to right and then Mets Manager Willie Randolph told the umpires about the issue. Patterson was called out instead of Ross and Ross batted again and singled. Randolph should have taken the out and kept quiet.
The Colorado Springs SkySox top the Albuquerque Isotopes, 5 – 1. The game is historic in that it is the first no-hitter ever thrown at home by the SkySox. Franklin Morales walks six in five hitless innings and is relieved in turn by Chris George (1 2/3 IP, 2 BB), Matt Daley (1 1/3 IP, 1 BB) and Steven Register (1 IP, no BB) as the Isotopes get nine walks but no hits.
The Brewers drop their 7th game in their past 8 contests, 5 – 3, to the Cardinals. One bright spot is Ben Sheets’s 1,082nd strikeout, breaking Teddy Higuera’s franchise record.
The Pirates top the Giants, 3 – 1, as Phil Dumatrait gets his first major league win. Barry Zito falls to 0-7, the first Giants hurler since Bill Clarkson in 1927 to reach such depths in just 7 starts.
Rookie Joey Votto becomes the 23rd member of the Cincinnati Reds to hit three home runs in a game. Votto, who starred for Canada in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, goes deep off Jon Lieber, Sean Marshall and Sean Gallagher in a 9 – 0 win over the Cubs. In the Reds’ 9-0 victory over the Cubs at Great American Ball Park, Jon Lieber joins Phil Norton (2000) in becoming only the second hurler in franchise history to allow four homers in one inning.
In a 13 – 1 win by the Twins, Carlos Gomez hits for the cycle, the first Twins player to do so since Kirby Puckett in 1986. Gomez homers off Mark Buehrle in the 1st, triples in the 5th, doubles in the 6th and singles in the 9th, driving in runs on each of the first three hits.
In a matchup of undefeated pitchers, Cleveland’s Cliff Lee (5-0) bests Chien-Ming Wang (6-0) and the Yankees, 3-0. The Indians southpaw, who tosses seven shutout innings, lowers his ERA to a minuscule 0.81, best in major leagues.
Gavin Floyd loses his second no-hit bid in less than a month as Joe Mauer doubles with one out in the ninth in the White Sox’ 7-1 victory over the Twins at U.S. Cellular Field. The Chicago right-hander also flirted with a no-no 24 days ago against the Tigers, which ended with Edgar Renteria’s single with one out in the eighth inning.
