The Texas Rangers make the winning bid for star Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish. As expected, the $51.7 million offer is the largest ever made through the posting system, breaking the record of $51.1 million which the Red Sox offered for Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2006. The Rangers now have 30 days to agree on a contract with Darvish.
2011 – The Orioles sign OF Endy Chavez to a one-year deal.
The Reds obtain right-hander Mat Latos from the Padres for four players that include two former first-round picks, infielder Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal, along with starting pitcher Edinson Volquez and minor leaguer Brad Boxberger. The deal fills a crucial need by bolstering Cincinnati’s rotation, but many observers believe the team gave up too much to acquire the quality starter.
The Mariners repatriate lefty reliever George Sherrill, who broke in with the team in 2004, signing him as a free agent.
The Padres send P Mat Latos to Cincinnati in return for Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger. Latos is considered one of the most talented young pitchers in the majors in spite of a mediocre 9-14 record last year.
The Phillies re-sign SS Jimmy Rollins to a three-year deal worth $33 million, with an option for a fourth season at the same salary.
Sentencing is announced in the trial of Barry Bonds. The major leagues’ all-time leading home run hitter is handed a two-year probation with a term of house arrest after being found guilty of obstruction of justice on April 13th. He is also fined $4000 and ordered to perform 250 hours of community service.
The Padres trade OF Aaron Cunningham to Cleveland for P Cory Burns. The Tribe also sign OF Felix Pie to a minor league deal.
The Rockies sign OF Michael Cuddyer, an All-Star with the Twins last season, to a three-year deal worth $31 million.
2011 – The Twins sign OF Josh Willingham to a three-year contract and the Cardinals sign reliever J.C. Romero for one year.
