The Yankees stop Texas, 6 – 1, to move to 7 1/2 games behind Boston in the American League East.

The Yankee Stadium crowd is pleasantly surprised as recently resigned manager Billy Martin returns to join in on the Old Timers’ Day festivities. Much to their delight, the fans respond with a seven-minute standing ovation when informed ‘Billy the Kid’ will return as the team’s skipper in 1980.

1978 – The Orioles’ Rich Dauer has his 10th straight game with at least two hits. In his streak, which began on July 18th, Dauer hit .583 (28 for 48). Dauer’s mark is a club record.

At Candlestick Park, the Giants beat the Cubs 9-8 in a game that began at Wrigley Field. The Chicago contest, interrupted three times by rain, was suspended with a man on first and two out in the top of the eighth inning because of darkness.

The Yankees win the first game of a doubleheader, 11 – 0, but the Indians rebound to win the second, 17 – 5. Duane Kuiper ties the major-league record with two bases-loaded triples in the nightcap, only the third player (after Bill Bruton and Elmer Valo) to do so in the 20th Century.

Mike Cubbage completes the cycle when he connects for a two-run seventh-inning triple in the Twins’ 6 – 3 win over the Blue Jays at Metropolitan Stadium. The Minnesota third baseman’s rare event becomes possible when he is thrown out (9-4-5) at third base, trying to stretch a double into a triple in his first at-bat.

The Giants’ Jack Clark has his hitting streak stopped at 26 games during a 2 – 1 loss to the Cardinals.

The Lodi Dodgers (California League) pull off two triple plays during an 11 – 6 win over Fresno. Bob Brenly is a victimized baserunner each time. It is the first time a pro team has had two triple plays in one game since 1904.
