1917 – The Philadelphia Phillies keep swapping with the Chicago Cubs, this month sending OF Dode Paskert, a seven-year veteran, to Chicago for slugger Cy Williams. Williams will flourish in the Baker Bowl, and will hit 222 home runs for the Phillies over the next 13 years. Paskert will not enjoy the same success at Wrigley Field.

1917 – Connie Mack and his Philadelphia Athletics need money. He sells P Joe Bush, C Wally Schang, and OF Amos Strunk to the Boston Red Sox for P Vean Gregg, OF Merlin Kopp, C Pinch Thomas, and $60,000.

10/3/1917 – In the first game of a double header at Philadelphia, Art Fletcher of the Giants, who was sixth in the batting order doubled in the top of the second (or possibly in the top of the fifth according to a second newspaper) when Dave Robertson should have hit. The hit was negated, but Fletcher managed to double twice in the game even without the one that was nullified. Perhaps due to the improper at bat, the box score for the game is not correct as it shows Fletcher with 6 AB, one too many, and the lead off hitter, George Burns with one too few.

7/12/1917: In the second game of a doubleheader, Reds left fielder Greasy Neale hit an inside-the-park homer with Hal Chase on base. However, base umpire Pete Harrison had called time before the pitch because of a ball loose on the field. Thus, the four-bagger was nullified.

Despite a state law banning Sunday baseball, the Robins play their first Sunday game in Brooklyn, charging regular admission and beating the Phils, 3 – 2. Charles Ebbetsannounces that the admission will benefit the Militia of Mercy, a wartime charity, and is for a pregame band concert and military drill exhibition before the game. When the band concert ends ticket sales stop to conform with the Sunday baseball laws. More than 12,000 attend. Despite the maneuver, Ebbets and manager Wilbert Robinson are arrested, and will pay a small fine.

Pirates manager Nixey Callahan is fired after his team goes 20-40. Popular star Honus Wagner is named field manager with Hugo Bezdek to take over the team’s business affairs. As his first order of business, Wagner guides to Bucs to a 5 – 4 win over the Reds, contributing a 2-run double as well.

The Tigers split with the host Browns, losing the opener before winning, 5 – 3. Ty Cobb warms up in the first game with two hits, then clocks an opposite field grand slam and a triple in the second game. The slam clears the LF bleachers.
