2007 – The Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers pull off a blockbuster deal. Florida sends 3B Miguel Cabrera (an All-Star in four of his five seasons) and two-time All-Star P Dontrelle Willis for prospects Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller and Dallas Trahern. The Marlins also get Mike Rabelo, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop in the deal. Maybin and Miller had been Detroit’s first-round picks in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The 32 year-old A-Rod, presently in contract talks with the Bronx Bombers with a $275 million framework in place to keep the third baseman in New York until 2018, won his first MVP with the Rangers in 2003.

The 26 year-old right-hander, who led the Senior Circuit in wins, ERA, and strikeouts with 240 K’s, is the unanimous choice of the BBWAA, being named first on all 32 of the writers’ ballots.

In front of 7,000 fans at Straub Park, Tampa Bay announces the team is changing its name from the Devil Rays to the Rays, revealing uniforms featuring the colors of Columbia blue, Navy blue, and gold with a yellow sunburst logo, that will replace the 11 year-old franchise’s original hues of green and blue and its insignia of a cartilaginous fish. Other options considered for names included the ‘Aces,’ ‘Bandits,’ ‘Cannons,’ ‘Dukes,’ ‘Stripes,’ and the ‘Nine,’ the personal favorite of team owner Stuart Sternberg.

2007 – Ed Wade strikes a deal with Philadelphia, his former employer. Houston deals closer Brad Lidge and utilityman Eric Bruntlett to the Phillies for outfielder Michael Bourn, reliever Geoff Geary and minor leaguer Mike Costanzo. Bourn spent three years at the University of Houston before signing with the Phils. Costanzo is dealt to Baltimore later that winter. 

Greg Maddux, breaking a tie with former Orioles third baseman Brooks Robinson and veteran hurler Jim Kaat for the most Gold Gloves in a career, wins his 17th, an honor bestowed by managers and coaches in each league for fielding excellence at the player’s given position. The 41 year-old future Hall of Famer, now with the Padres, has been selected every year as the top fielding pitcher in the National League since 1990, except for 2003, when Mike Hampton of the Braves won the honor.

After paying $51.1 million for the rights to negotiate with the right-hander, Boston obtained ‘Dice-K’ from the Seibu Lions, signing the World Baseball Classic MVP to a 6-year deal worth $52 million.
