Walter O’Malley succeeds Branch Rickey as president of the Dodgers. O’Malley, who had offered to buy Rickey’s share of the club to become majority owner, is forced to pay more money when ‘the Mahatma’, in a final act of defiance about being told to leave the organization, offers his share of the team to a friend for a million dollars, a deal the new president believes, but can’t prove, to be as “fraudulent as a four-dollar bill.”
On October 18, 1950 — After spending a half of a century managing in the major leagues, Connie Mack retires as manager of the A’s. The 87 year-old manager, who has the most wins and losses in the history of the game, will be replaced by Jimmy Dykes, after compiling a 3731-3948 (.486) record during his 50 years in the dugout.
1950 – At Yankee Stadium, rookie pitcher Whitey Ford, with 9th-inning help from Allie Reynolds, beats Bob Miller and the Philadelphia Phillies, 5 – 2, as the Yankees complete the World Series sweep of the Phillies’ “Whiz Kids.” Jerry Coleman wins the Babe Ruth Award as the Series MVP. The sweep of the Phillies gives the Yankees their 13th World Championship.
