1925 – Rabbit Maranville is waived to the Brooklyn Robins from the Chicago Cubs.
1925 – Marv Goodwin, a former pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals who joined the Cincinnati Reds at the end of the season, is killed in a plane he is piloting. At age 34, Goodwin is the first active player to die from injuries sustained in an airplane crash. Goodwin was one of the original spitballers who was “grandfathered.”
Two weeks after pitching his final game for the Reds, Army Reserve First Lieutenant pilot Marvin Goodwin’s plane goes into a tailspin and crashes near Houston’s Ellington Field. The 34 year-old right-hander, who appeared in four games for Cincinnati, three as a starter, and posted an 0-2 record, which included two complete games, will die in three days as the result of being severely injured, with two broken legs, a fractured skull, along with critical internal injuries.
1925 – Capping a comeback from a 3 – 1 deficit, Kiki Cuyler hits a bases-loaded double in the 8th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9 – 7 victory over Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators in Game 7 of the World Series.
10/10/1925 – In game three of the World Series, Nemo Leibold pinch hit for Senators pitcher Alex Ferguson in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Leibold walked, Earl McNeely ran for him. McNeely remained in the game in centerfield while Firpo Marberry entered the game as the new pitcher. Marberry was inserted into the fifth spot in the batting order. In the bottom of the eighth with one out, Muddy Ruel singled. The next batter should have been McNeely but Marberry walked to the plate and sacrificed Ruel to second. The Pirates did not protest the improper batter (possibly since Marberry came up in the usual spot for the pitcher). The next proper batter was Buddy Myer in the sixth spot but the Senators went to the top of the lineup and Sam Rice who grounded out to end the inning.

Before Game 1 of the World Series at Forbes Field, Commissioner Landis orders the Pirates and the Senators to wear black armbands in memory of former Giants legend Christy Matthewson, who died this morning at Saranac Lake, NY, of tuberculosis. Although the practice will become a common occurrence, this is believed to be the first time in major league history that teams have altered their uniform to acknowledged the passing of a fellow ballplayer.
