1905 – SS Phil Lewis has a busy afternoon at Washington Park in Brooklyn’s 2 – 1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Lewis has 18 chances and comes up with seven assists, six putoutsand five errors, the latter tying the National League record.
On April 26, 1905, Chicago Cubs outfielder Jack McCarthy throws out three runners at home plate, each time completing a double play, during a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. McCarthy becomes only the second outfielder in major league history to record three double plays in a single game.
Ducky Holmes, White Stockings OF, has four assists in a game, tying the major league record. But his team still loses 11 – 3 to Cy Young and the Boston Americans.
1902 – Chicago’s infield combo of Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance pull off their first double play to back up Carl Lundgren’s 6 – 3 win over the Reds.
Reds 2B Bid McPhee makes 3 errors in one inning as Cincinnati loses the opener of 2 to Brooklyn‚ 10-9. Tom Parrott‚ scheduled to start game 1‚ doesn’t arrive until the 5th inning. He gets the start in game 2 (as noted by Rhodes and Snyder)‚ but walks off the mound in the 2nd inning after Arlie Latham criticises him for a lack of effort.
June 20, 1883 – Boston mauls Philadelphia 29-4‚ as Sam Wise goes 6-for-7 with 4 extra-base hits. Wise‚ Ezra Sutton‚ and Joe Hornung each score 5 runs‚ and Jim Whitney has 8 plate appearances.
