1972 – Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench, who posted a .270 average with 40 home runs and 125 RBI, wins the National League MVP Award for the second time in three years.
On November 18, 1970, Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench wins the National League MVP Award with 326 points, 108 more than Billy Williams of the Chicago Cubs. Bench hit for a .293 average with 45 home runs and 148 RBI, while Williams finished with .322, 42, 109.
The BBWAA selects Willie McCovey (.320, 45, 126) as the National League’s Most Valuable Player. The Giants first baseman edges Tom Seaver, who posted a 2.21 ERA with 208 strikeouts and a league-leading 25 wins for the World Champion Mets.
Bob Gibson (22-9, 268 strikeouts, 1.12 ERA) wins the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award, edging out Reds infielder Pete Rose. The Cardinals’ right-hander was also the unanimous winner of the Senior Circuit’s Cy Young Award when he garnered all 20 of the first-place votes cast by the BBWAA.
1967 – New York Mets pitcher Tom Seaver, who posted a 16-12 record with 170 strikeouts and 2.76 ERA, is named National League Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA.
1967 – St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Orlando Cepeda becomes only the second National League player to unanimously win the MVP Award. Cepeda batted .325 with 25 home runs and 111 RBI in leading the Cardinals to the pennant. New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell swept the National League MVP voting in 1936.

Roberto Clemente, edging out Dodger hurler Sandy Koufax (27-9, 1.73, 317 strikeouts), is named the National League MVP. The Pirates’ 32 year-old right fielder hit .317 with 29 home runs and drove in 119 runs for the third-place team.
1965 – San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays, who hit .312 with 52 home runs and 112 RBI, is named National League MVP. Mays receives 224 votes to 177 for Sandy Koufax, who, pitching for the Dodgers, had a 2.04 ERA, won 26 games, allowed just 5.79 hits per nine innings, and struck out 382 batters.
1964 – St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Ken Boyer, who hit .295 with 24 home runs and 119 RBI, is selected as the National League Most Valuable Player. Boyer outdistances Johnny Callison and Bill White for the honor.
