White Sox pitcher Jim Wilson allows just six hits, but three of them are home runs by Hank Bauer (two) and Mickey Mantle (one). On a botched hit-and-run attempt, Luis Aparicio is thrown out at second base, ending his streak of 26 consecutive stolen bases.
Braves left-hander Warren Spahn, with his 8-0 blanking of the Cubs at Wrigley Field, sets a National League mark for shutouts thrown by a southpaw. The future Hall of Famer has now held his opponents scoreless 41 times, breaking the record previously shared by Eppa Rixey and Larry French.
Ray Moore blanks Cleveland, 6 – 0, as the Orioles pitching staff hurls its fourth consecutive shutout, for a new American League mark.
8/13/1954 – In a 16-inning game in which the home-standing White Sox beat the Tigers, 1-0, substitute first-sacker Wayne Belardi batted out of turn. Reno Bertoia pinch ran for fifth-place hitting first baseman Walt Dropo in the thirteenth inning and stayed in the game playing second base. Belardi entered the game in the eighth spot at that time. In the fifteenth inning after fourth-place hitter Ray Boone had walked with one out, Belardi came to the plate in Bertoia’s spot and fouled out to the catcher. Detroit realized their mistake and sent Belardi up again the next inning and he successfully sacrificed catcher Red Wilson to second base. Both pitchers, Al Aber for Detroit and Jack Harshman for Chicago, pitched complete games.
Warren Spahn of the Braves allows just an infield hit to Richie Ashburn in the 4th in beating Philadelphia, 5 – 0. It is Spahn’s 31st career shutout.
