Stephen M. Ross, the owner of the Dolphins’ football franchise and the stadium in which the NFL team and Marlins play their games, and singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett announced a unique branding partnership which renames the ballpark Land Shark Stadium. The sponsorship deal, which brings together Buffett’s Margaritaville and Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Land Shark Lager joint venture, is reportedly for only eight months with the name reverting to Dolphin Stadium unless another naming rights deal happens before Super Bowl XLIV and the 2010 Pro Bowl.

Dodgers win streak halted at 13

The Dodgers fail to improve upon their 13-game winning streak at home to open the season–the victorious span surpassed the 1911 Tigers to set a new major league mark. The 11-9 loss to Washington comes on the same day the team learns about Manny Ramirez, the club’s most productive hitter, being suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a banned substance.

Manny being Manny gets suspened for 50 games

Major League Baseball suspends Manny Ramirez for fifty games after he tests positive for the use of a banned substance. The 36 year-old Dodgers Star Outfield and most productive player, will not be eligible to return to the team until July 3, apologizes to the fans, explaining he did not take steroids, but was given a medication which a doctor thought was okay to be prescribed. He is the most prominent player yet caught under Major League Baseball’s PED policy implemented in 2005.

The 24 year-old third baseman kept his streak intact with a first inning single off Randy Wolf in the Nationals’ 11-9 victory over LA at Chavez Ravine.

Diamondsbacks fire Bob Melvin

The Diamondbacks dismiss Bob Melvin and will name A.J. Hinch, their current vice president for player development, as the team’s new skipper. The 2007 NL Manager of the Year, who had one year left on his contract, compiled a 337-340 record during his four-plus years in the Arizona dugout. The decision came after losing, 4 – 3, to the Padres in 10 innings. The D-Backs have started the year 12-17 and are already 8 1/2 games back of Los Angeles.

Former All-Star pitcher Bronson Arroyo of the Reds has one of the worst starts of his career as the Brewers rock him for five runs in the 1st inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by J.J. Hardy, and a grand slam off the bat of Ryan Braun which sends him to the showers before he can retire a batter in the 2nd. The Brew Crew adds five runs off infielder Paul Janish in the 9th for a final score of 15 – 3. Manny Parra picks up his first win of the year after four losses.
