On April 5, 1995, the New York Yankees acquire relief ace John Wetteland from the Montreal Expos for minor league outfielder Fernando Seguignol, a player to be named later, and cash. Wetteland will help the Yankees to the World Championship in 1996.
Los Angeles Dodgers sign Japanese pitching star Hideo Nomo
1994 – In one of the biggest player swaps in baseball history, the Astros send infielders Ken Caminiti, Andujar Cedeno and Roberto Petagine, outfielder Steve Finley and pitchers Brian Williams and Sean Fesh to San Diego for infielders Craig Shipley and Ricky Gutierrez, outfielders Derek Bell and Phil Plantier and pitchers Doug Brocail and Pedro Martinez. It’s a thinly-disguised salary dump and, were it not for Bell’s success, would have been regarded as one of the worst trades in club history. Caminiti and Finley blossom into All-Stars who lead the Padres to the N.L. title in 1998. Bell and Gutierrez are the only salvagable parts for the Astros and they are both gone after the 1999 season.
California Angels sign pitcher Lee Smith to a free agent contract
The Rangers trade Jose Canseco (.282, 31, 90) to the Red Sox for outfielder Otis Nixon and infielder Luis Ortiz.
The Braves trade OF Deion Sanders to the Reds in exchange for OF Roberto Kelly and minor league P Roger Etheridge.
The Mets trade Vince Coleman to the Royals along with $500,000, a sum that will make up the difference between the two salaries, reacquiring Kevin McReynolds. New York’s co-owner Fred Wilpon had clearly indicated that Coleman would never wear his team’s uniform again due to the outfielder’s role in last season’s firecracker incident at Dodger Stadium, that was reported to injure three fans in the Chavez Ravine parking lot.
On November 22, 1993, the Texas Rangers sign free agent Will “The Thrill” Clark to a multi-year contract. The slick-fielding, hard-hitting Clark leaves the San Francisco Giants after eight seasons in the Bay Area. Clark, who batted .283 with 73 RBIs for the Giants, will raise his average to .329 with the Rangers in 1994….
The Dodgers trade future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez to the Expos for second baseman Delino DeShields, who will hit .241 during his three seasons with Los Angeles. The 21 year-old Dominican right-hander will win 55 of 88 decisions in his four-year tenure with Montreal, before being dealt to Boston before the 1998 campaign.
The Montreal Expos acquire starting pitcher Pedro Martinez from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for second baseman Delino DeShields.
