In a Reds win in Cincinnati, Cards player-manager Roger Bresnahan is called out on strikes by Bill Klem to end the game. When Roger argues too long over the call, Klem belts him. An embarrassed National League president Tom Lynch will fine the arbiter $50 for the punch.
Umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting in the face of Athletics 2B Eddie Collins, who had questioned a call. Under police guard, Hurst is ushered off the field. This incident will eventually lead to Hurst’s banishment from baseball in two weeks.
1909 – The National League deprives umpires of the power to fine players and decrees that relief pitchers must retire at least one batter before being relieved.
1907 – Christy Mathewson shuts out the Pirates, 2 – 0, while Bill Klem continues his battle with the Giants by tossing four more, including John McGraw.
In an effort to prevent hitters from rubbing out chalk lines, National League umpire Hank O’Day suggests white rubber strips be used to mark out the batter’s box. The former right-handed hurler and future Hall of Famer will interrupt his 30-year umpiring career to manage the Reds in 1912 and the Cubs in 1914, becoming the only person ever to play, manage, and umpire for a full season in the major leagues.
Kid Elberfeld, the hot-headed Tabasco Kid, assaults umpire Silk O’Loughlin and is forcibly removed by police in the first game of a doubleheader, a 4 – 3 New York win over the Athletics. In the second game, New York baserunner Willie Keeler collides with SS Lave Cross trying to field a ground ball, and two runs score. O’Loughlin sees no interference, a call so hotly disputed by A’s captain Harry Davis that, after eight minutes of arguing, the umpire forfeits the game to New York. For New York, it is a major-league record 5th straight doubleheader sweep in consecutive days.
1904 – New York Giants players leave Mobile, AL ahead of the law after a local judge issues a warrant for their arrest for beating a local umpire unconscious during an exhibition game. The players were goaded by manager John McGraw
The hits keep coming. In Cleveland, Milwaukee manager Hugh Duffy hits umpire Al Mannassau when a fly ball nicking the foul line is called fair, scoring the winning runs in a 5 – 4 win for the Blues. Duffy is suspended indefinitely.
