On February 8 1968 — The Cincinnati Reds trade catcher Johnny Edwards to the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder Jimy Williams and catcher Pat Corrales, both future major league skippers.
Williams was a major league manager for 12 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros. Corrales spent 10 years as a major league manager with the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians.
After one season with the Cardinals, Edwards was dealt to the Astros. He was the Astros’ starting catcher for four seasons, and closed out a 14-year major league career with Houston.
While considered a heady catcher and smart handler of pitchers, Edwards turned out to be the only player in the trade never to manage at the major league level.
