On May 12, 1970, Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs becomes the ninth player to join the 500-home run club. It is also his 1,600th career RBI., The future Hall of Famer connects against Atlanta Braves right-hander Pat Jarvis, driving a pitch into the left-field bleachers at Wrigley Field. The ball, after it bounces back onto the field, is retrieved by Braves left fielder Rico Carty, who gives it to Banks. Carty, meanwhile, hits safely in his 30th consecutive game.
The Cub’s were down 3-2 however in the bottom of the 9th, but Billy Williams hit a lead off homerun his 12th off Hoyt Wilhelm. The Cub’s will win on a walk off bases-loaded single by Ron Santo.
Bank’s was asked what is next, he said, “My next goal? that is easy to play in a World Series on Wrigley Field.” Bank’s said the homerun came on an inside fastball, a pitch he has had trouble with this season.
