Furtue Hall of Famer Willie Mays is Born

On May 6, 1931, future Hall of Famer Willie Mays is born in Westfield, Alabama. The son of Annie Satterwhite and William Mays. The ‘Say Hey Kid’s’ dad, called Cat because of his quick reflexes, was named after William Taft, the U.S. president elected in 1912, the same year Willie’s father was born.

After a brief career in the Negro Leagues, Mays will make his major league debut with the New York Giants in 1951. During a 22-year career, Mays will bat .302 and hit 660 home runs, the third highest total in the major leagues.
