At Jack Murphy Stadium, the San Diego Padres set a major league record when the first three batters in the bottom of the 1st inning hit home runs off San Francisco Giants starter Roger Mason in their home opener. The Padres, trailing 2 – 0, get homers from Marvell Wynne, Tony Gwynn and John Kruk. The feat will be matched by Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa, and Gary Sheffield of the Atlanta Braves against Jeff Austin of the Cincinnati Reds on May 28, 2003.
San Diego Padres acquire third baseman Gary Sheffield and a minor leaguer from the Milwaukee Brewers
Padres Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff become the first teammates to swat back-to-back home runs twice in the same game since Ernie Banks and Dee Fondy of the Cubs in 1955. The Padres win the game over the Astros, 7 – 5.
As of today, the leading hitters in the American League and National League, Edgar Martinez and John Kruk, are both hitting .341. The second-leading hitters in each league, Kirby Puckett and Andy Van Slyke, are both hitting .331. The third-leading hitters in each league, Shane Mack and Gary Sheffield, are both hitting .329.
The Padres outslug the Pirates, 11 – 6, with Fred McGriff collecting three hits and providing the longest home run in the majors this season at 473 feet. It is Fred’s 30th. Gary Sheffield adds his 28th.
The Marlins obtain OF Gary Sheffield and P Rich Rodriguez from the Padres for P Trevor Hoffman, Andres Berumen and Jose Martinez. The Fish will give Sheffield a four-year contract extension in September. Hoffman, The 25 year-old rookie right-hander will go on to save 552 games for the team during his fifteen and half years with the franchise and be elected into the Hall of Fame.
The American League defeats the National League, 9 – 3, in the 1993 All-Star Game. Kirby Puckett, Roberto Alomar, and Gary Sheffield hit home runs, while the win goes to Jack McDowell. Craig Biggio is at 2B for the NL: last year, he was on the team as a catcher, the first player ever to make it at those two positions. A highlight of the game is Randy Johnson firing a 95-MPH fastball over John Kruk’s head. Kruk bails out on the next two pitches, saying afterwards: “he’s going to kill somebody.”

2000 – The Dodgers defeat the Cubs‚ 7 – 5‚ hitting 4 homers (Kevin Elster‚ Darren Dreifort‚ Gary Sheffield and Shawn Green) in the 4th inning off Chicago P Phil Norton‚ making his major league debut. Pitcher Dreifort hits two homers in the contest for Los Angeles‚ becoming the first pitcher to do so since 1990. Norton also sets a record becoming the first Cub pitcher in the team’s 124-year history to surrender four homers in an inning.
Gary Sheffield ties the Dodgers’ franchise single-season home run record when he goes deep off Woody Williams in the team’s 3-0 victory over San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium. The left fielder, with his career best 43rd round tripper, now shares the team mark with Duke Snider, who established the record in 1956 when he played for Brooklyn.

Shawn Green breaks a franchise record for homers in a season with his 44th home run, the first of his two dingers the Dodger right fielder will hit of Dustin Hermanson in the team’s 7-1 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The previous mark had been shared by Duke Snider (1956) and Gary Sheffield (2000).

6/27/2002: The Braves’ Gary Sheffield homered to left off Pedro Astacio in the top of the first inning at Shea Stadium in New York. The blast came with one man on base and one out. Sheffield doubled to left-center in the third inning but both extra-base hits were lost to rain.
In a 7-1 loss to the Phillies at Turner Field, Gary Sheffield’s team record of reaching base ends at 52 straight games. The Braves’ right fielder surpasses Dale Murphy’s previous mark of 48 consecutive contests.
When Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa, and Gary Sheffield all go deep off the Reds’ Jeff Austin in the bottom of the first inning, the Braves become only the second team in big league history to begin a game with three consecutive home runs. In the first big move of the offseason, the Tigers trade three talented pitching prospects, Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan, and Anthony Claggett, to the Yankees for Gary Sheffield. 2009 – The Detroit Tigers surprisingly cut slugger Gary Sheffield, who is one home run shy of 500 for his career. Sheffield, a 9-time All-Star, is 25th on the all-time home run list and 27th in RBI (1,633). He only hit .178 in spring training, but went deep in 5 of 45 at-bats. He says he is not shocked, but is surprised. Marcus Thames will replace Sheffield as Detroit’s starting DH.
The Mets, obligated only to pay the major league minimum of $400,000, sign Gary Sheffield (.225, 19, 57) in hopes of adding a much-needed right-handed bat to the lineup. The 40 year-old offensively challenged outfielder, who has 499 career home runs, was unexpectedly released by the Tigers earlier in the week despite having $14 million left on his contract.

He delivers a pinch-hit homer off the Brewers’ Mitch Stetter in the 7th inning of a game at Citi Field, still in its first month of operation. It is Sheffield’s first home run for the New York Mets, after having been released in spring training by the Detroit Tigers while sitting on 499 home runs. The Mets win the game, 5 – 4, on Luis Castillo’s 9th inning two-out single.
In Milwaukee, 3B Casey McGehee plays both the goat and the hero. In the top of the 6th, his drop of a routine pop fly leads to two New York runs; in the bottom of the inning, he hits his first career grand slam; in the 7th, he takes his time fielding a ground ball off the bat of Gary Sheffield, leading to an infield hit and another run; he is then removed in a double switch. Still, the Brewers bang out 19 hits, including 4 by J.J. Hardy and 3 by Jason Kendall, for a 10 – 6 win. With the loss, the Mets fall below .500.
2017 – The Marlins defeat the Rockies, 5 – 3, as Giancarlo Stanton hits his 250th career home run. It is also his 42nd of the season, tying the Marlins franchise record set by Gary Sheffield in 1996. Stanton has hit 21 homers in his last 33 games to surge to the major league lead.
