Biography
“He can run, throw, field, and hit with power,” Gene Mauch said of Oklahoma-born Johnny Callison. “There’s nothing he can’t do well on a ball field.” Playing for Mauch with Philadelphia, the lefthanded hitter batted as high as .300, hit as many as 32 HR, twice knocked in over 100 runs, and twice scored over 100. He led the NL with 40 doubles in 1966, and twice hit three homers in a game. In the 1964 All-Star Game, he hit a dramatic homer with two on and two out in the ninth off Dick Radatz to give the NL a 7-4 victory.
In 10 years with the Philadelphia Phillies (1960-69), Johnny Callison was a fan-favorite and had 1,438 hits, 185 HR, and was an All-Star in 3 seasons. In 1964, he finished runner-up to the NL MVP Award (31 HR, 104 RBI) to St. Louis Cardinals 3B Ken Boyer. Johnny led the NL in triples twice and doubles once. He also had a “gun arm” and led NL outfielders in assists 4 straight years (1962-65). He is a member of the Phillies Wall of Fame.
In his 16-year career (1958-1973), Callison had 1,757 hits, 226 HR, 840 RBI, 926 runs, .264 BA, .331 OBP, .441 Slg., & .773 OPS.
