Biography

Mark Koenig (1904-1993) was shortstop on the great Yankee teams of the mid 1920’s. He batted second in their Murderers’ Row lineup of 1927, and was on base when Ruth hit his 60th home run. Koenig had great range at short, typically finishing among league leaders in assists, but also committed many errors. He was a reliable switch hitter who rarely struck out, and this endeared him to manager Miller Huggins. But when Huggins died and was replaced by Bob Shawkey, Koenig fell out of favor and was dealt to the Tigers. He also played for the Cubs, Reds, and Giants before ending his MLB career in 1936 with a .279 lifetime BA. He was the last surviving member of Murderers’ Row when he passed in 1993. His old uniform number 2 would be retired when Derek Jeter called it a career 21 years later.
