On April 21, 1963, minor league slugger Rico Carty hits two home runs in one at-bat-but only one counts. Playing in the Northwest League, the Yakima catcher hits a home run, but the blast is negated because time had been called. Carty, a future major league star, proceeds to hit a “legitimate” home run later in the at-bat.
April 19, 1963: At the Polo Grounds, with Roger Craig on the mound, Henry Aaron belts his 300th career home run in an 8-1 victory over the Mets.
Willie Mays becomes the all-time National League right-handed home run leader when he connects for his 371st career round-tripper, a fourth-inning solo shot off Chicago’s Larry Jackson in the Giants’ 5-1 victory at Candlestick Park. The San Francisco center fielder surpasses Gil Hodges, who established the mark last season.
1963 – Backup catcher Jim Campbell homers in the 13th for a 2-1 triumph over the Giants. The Colts’ other run comes when Howie Goss, Carroll Hardy and Bob Aspromonte successfully execute a triple steal.
4/17/1963: Al Luplow had a homer rained out against the Senators in Cleveland. The hit came off Tom Cheney with one out and no one on in the first inning.
April 16, 1963: On Opening Day at County Stadium, Eddie Mathews hits the 400th home run of his career off of Phillies’ Jack Hamilton. It was a two-run shot, driving in Hank Aaron. At the time, Mathews became 7th on the all-time home run list. Trailing only Ruth, Foxx, Williams, Ott, Gehrig & Musial.
